On thin ice

If you stand on thin ice, you’ll probably get your feet wet! However, if you’re on thin ice you need to be careful what you say and do, as you’re close to getting into trouble. So watch out! Interestingly, we say a sheet of ice like we say a sheet of paper.

Examples

“Never walk on thin ice. It’s too dangerous.”

“He has been late to work every day this week. He’d better make an effort to get to work on time next week, as he’s on very thin ice!”

“Look at the photo and you’ll see a sheet of ice being held in someone’s hand.”
