Roughly speaking
When you are speaking about something in general you can say you are roughly speaking. The word roughly is also another way of saying about/more or less. And when you take rough notes, you write simply to remind yourself.
Examples
“Roughly speaking the Eurostar is the best way to travel from London to Paris.”
“It takes roughly two and a half hours to get there by train.”
“I made some rough notes on the train to help me prepare for my meeting in Paris.”
